Dear Mom,

This week has been really crazy. Ted has been travelling a lot with his job. The kids have been working hard at school and seem to be very happy. Kristen got an A on her paper last week and can’t stop talking about it.

I hope you enjoy this week’s story:
The Path
Several years ago we lived in Wisconsin.  We had a large backyard that ran right up to a state park.  From our backdoor there was a path that led through a huge forest.  It became part of my daily routine to go out on long walks through the woods.  In the spring and summer there was a thick green canopy of leaves overhead that would shade you from the sun.  In the fall the path was covered with a heavy blanket of red and golden leaves that would crunch beneath your feet.  In the winter, the snow came and covered everything in white and silver, making passage through the forest almost impossible.  There were signs posted every so often telling you which way to go.

After walking for miles through the dark forest there was a clearing. This was called Butterfly Garden, a large meadow full of tall wildflowers set in motion by thousands of butterflies that seemed to dance on the wind. Further down the path was Frog Lake where you could be serenaded by the croaking of a hundred frogs. Past frog lake was the Lapham Peak Tower. It was an old wooden tower that sat high on a hill top used for monitoring weather conditions. When you climbed up to the top and looked out, it seemed like you could see the entire state of Wisconsin. The tower was the farthest point I had ever ventured to on my walks. I would always rest up there before heading back home. I can’t even begin to tell you how many hours I spent out there exploring. When I was out there walking the only sounds I could hear were the sounds of nature. The sounds of the wind in the trees, birds singing, and twigs snapping underneath my feet. Out in the woods I felt a sense of peace come over me, a oneness with God and family.

We eventually had to move from our little town in Wisconsin to a large city. The pace of life seems to be much quicker here. Some day’s life can be so hectic. There are times when I feel a little overwhelmed by everything going on around me. Whenever I get to feel like that, I take a moment and close my eyes. I try to visualize myself walking down that path in the forest. I’m walking past Butterfly Garden and can see thousands of butterflies fluttering in the wind. I can hear birds singing and the frogs in the pond. I can feel the warmth of the sun on my shoulders and face. And for a moment, I am one with God.

I’ll send you another letter next week.

Love always,

Mary, Ted and the kids
